Modernization of the apron lighting at Gdańsk Airport

LEDVANCE gained the amazing opportunity to deliver modern and functional lighting to the Gdansk airport in Poland. A total of 33 luminaires with a power of 500 kW consume a total of 16.5 kW of power, emitting a total of over 2 million lumens of light flux.
The luminaires are turned on after dusk, based on an automated system. They can operate year-round, in accordance with customer and regulatory requirements, and are resistant to harsh environmental conditions.
Project benefits:

  • The old installation required modernization
The existing lighting worked for about 20 years at
  • 16.5 kW instead of 62 kW
The new lighting allowed us to reduce energy consumption almost four times.
  • Compliance with standards
Uniform brightness with reduced glare effect with UGR index ≤ 14.
  • Automatic lighting switching on
The operation of the luminaires is controlled by an automatic system that did not require replacement

the CHALLENGE

Difficult to meet requirements
The installation had to meet the requirements resulting from the standards and regulations of three different institutions: ICAO - International Civil Aviation Organization, CAA - Civil Aviation Authority and EASA - European Union Agency for... Aviation Safety. Therefore, the system had to be designed in such a way that it would not only provide adequate exposure, but also reliability

A large surface requires even lighting
Standards imposed by institutions regulating the aviation market require that parking aprons be properly lit. It is important not to leave areas underlit, even though the entire parking area is very large. An additional difficulty is the need to place luminaires on masts, which involve additional costs.

the SOLUTION

Installation of LED luminaires on 18-meter masts
The selection of LED floodlights with a luminous flux of 61,000 lumens and their installation on high masts allowed for even illumination of the airport apron. Thanks to the high position of the luminaires, the light is not obscured by parking planes. In addition, adding two additional luminaires compared to the original installation allowed for more uniform lighting.

A selection of high-power luminaires
ECO HP FLOOD 500W 857 VN 61000LM BK luminaires selected
Direct replacement for luminaires with discharge luminaires
Uniform lighting of a large space.

Minimizing the number of luminaires used by using high-power models usually leads to a reduction in the uniformity of exposure. However, by choosing ECO HP FLOOD 500W 857 VN 61000LM BK luminaires, characterized by very even light distribution, it was possible to meet the difficult requirements of aviation organizations.

The luminaires used distribute the light flux symmetrically and have a built-in rotational adjustment mechanism. They are ideal for illuminating spaces from high masts, which avoids the need to significantly expand the number of masts on the tarmac, which could make daily flight operations more difficult.

the BENEFITS

Benefits of using luminaires
Selected luminaires are characterized by up to 90 % energy savings compared to typical halogen floodlights with similar parameters, and 45 % savings compared to conventional discharge luminaires.
They are also characterized by high luminous efficiency, at the level of 122 lm/W, emitting daylight light, perfectly meeting the customer's needs.

SUMMARY

The previous 31 metal halide luminaires with a power of 2000 W each were replaced by 33 LEDVANCE LED luminaires
33 LED luminaires with a power of 500 W each and a luminous flux of 62,000 lumens were installed, which allowed for uniform illumination of the airport apron, in accordance with the requirements of institutions regulating the operation of airports.

Almost 4-fold reduction in energy consumption
The key to the designed installation was the reduction of power consumption. The new luminaires consume a total of 16.5 kW, instead of 62 kW, which not only reduces costs, but also has an image-important effect on the Gdańsk airport. It indicates that the airport management cares about the environment by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during the production of electricity needed to power the lighting system.

more about the product

The use of LED lighting allowed not only to reduce the costs of electricity needed to illuminate parking aprons several times, but also to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted due to lighting needs.

We decided to choose LEDVANCE luminaires due to their long-term, positive effects. experience in working with this company's products. This also allowed us to offer the customer a favorable price.
