SMART+ MATTER PRODUCTS

1. GENERAL SMART+ MATTER INFORMATION


Matter is a new communication standard, which was originally started by Amazon, Google, Apple and the Zigbee Alliance as CHIP (“Project Connected Home over IP”). During the development process CHIP was renamed to MATTER and the Zigbee Alliance changed its name to CSA (“Connectivity Standards Alliance”). Since then, a lot of other organizations of the smart home and semiconductor industry joined the Matter project.

The goal of Matter Standard is to improve the interoperability and compatibility between different products and smart home systems to reduce the complexity in smart home for the end users. The Matter standard is not based on one specific network protocol like WiFi or Zigbee. Matter can work with WiFi, Thread, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Z-Wave etc. For each network protocol, there are different ways to integrate the devices into a Matter network. For WiFi and Thread, each single device is certified and can be added individually to the Matter smart home. For Zigbee, Bluetooth or Z-Wave, the gateways are generally certified. For example, after adding a certified Matter Zigbee gateway to a Matter system each single Zigbee device of the Zigbee gateway can now be controlled in the Matter smart home system.

Please be aware that Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and other smart home systems may require a smart speaker or a hub even for adding Matter over WiFi devices.
The LEDVANCE SMART+ App does not require any gateway or hub to add Matter over WiFi devices. Here, the Matter over WiFi devices can be connected directly to the WiFi access point. For Matter over Thread devices, a speaker or hub with Thread Border Router is needed.

Besides the interoperability, the main advantages of Matter standard are as follows:

-Local connection: All Matter devices can communicate locally with each other. The cloud is optional. However, mostly used for remote control or automation.
-Easy pairing: Each Matter device has its own QR-Code or 11- or 21-digits code, which needs to be entered during the pairing process.
-Multi-Admin: Matter products can be parallelly used in different systems, so called “Matter fabrics”.
-Firmware updates: Firmware updates can be uploaded by manufacturers on decentralized update servers. These servers can be accessed by any Matter system to get the latest firmware updates. It is not mandatory to use the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates. Please note that this feature is still under development in most of the Matter systems and currently not available.
The LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter portfolio offers a wide variety of Lighting devices and plugs. We will continue to add a lot of new SMART+ Matter products to the portfolio. The SMART+ Matter products can be identified by the “Matter badge” on the packaging. This can also be seen in the form of the Matter QR-Code or the 11 digits numeric code on the product and on the user instructions. Currently these products are based on Matter over WiFi technology. The network protocol can be found on the packaging for detailed information.

The LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products can be used in any Matter system or Matter compatible App as per the specifications of MATTER protocol. For additional functionality, you can use our LEDVANCE SMART+ App.

2. SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES

2.1.1.  WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED WITH SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES?

Our LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products can be controlled with the compatible iOS or Android smartphones or tablets with the LEDVANCE SMART+ app or any other Matter compatible app like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple Home. The specific requirements may vary from system to system.
Requirements for our LEDVANCE SMART+ App can be found in the LEDVANCE SMART+ App FAQs.
Information regarding Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple Home can be found in the FAQ section 2 (Other Matter ecosystems).
Please note that the SMART+ Matter products are not compatible with the old LEDVANCE SMART+ WiFi App.
 
2.1.2.     HOW CAN I ADD A SMART+ MATTER LAMP TO A MATTER COMPATIBLE SYSTEM?

The LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products need to be in pairing mode to add them to the MATTER system. The lighting products indicate the pairing mode by blinking for 6 seconds. This is also the default state of our products. The lighting products are then in pairing mode for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the pairing mode turns off and it is not possible to pair the Matter products into any system. To get the products back to the pairing mode, simply power off and on the lamps and they will start blinking again for 6s and are again in pairing mode for 15 minutes. In case the lamps don’t blink, then you need to factory reset the lamps. To add the SMART+ MATTER product in the SMART+ app, you need to scan the QR-Code or enter the 11 digits code, mentioned on the product itself or in the user instructions. Detailed information can be found in the LEDVANCE SMART+ App FAQs. Information about adding devices in Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple Home can be found in FAQ section 2 (Other Matter ecosystems).
 
2.1.3.  HOW CAN I UPDATE MY SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICE?

A firmware update to the latest version can be done by using the LEDVANCE SMART+ app. This can be done easily through the Settings option of the Product. More information for the firmware update in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app can be found here:  LEDVANCE SMART+ App FAQs

2.2.1.     WHAT IS THE DEFAULT SETTING OF SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES?

The default setting of SMART+ MATTER Lighting devices is determined by the last status of the lighting device before it is turned off. The last used settings (e.g. Color/Color Temperature/Brightness) are stored after the lighting device remains turned on for 10 seconds. In case of power outage or when the lighting device is switched on from a Wall switch, then it will turn on with the last saved settings.

2.2.2.  WHAT IS THE WIRELESS RANGE OF SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES?

The signal strength or wireless range of your SMART+ MATTER lighting devices depends on the presence of obstacles between the product and the router. Additionally, the material properties of using an additional luminaire over the lamps may have an influence on the signal strength. If there are no obstacles, then the lighting device can be installed 50m away from the WiFi Router.
 
2.2.3.  HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES BE RESET?

SMART+ MATTER Lighting devices can be reset and reconfigured easily without reinstalling the entire smart home system. This can be done by clicking the “Delete device” button in the settings page of the lighting device in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app or the corresponding Matter app.

In case you have added a LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter lighting device in several fabrics, some apps provide the option to delete the device just from this fabric or to delete it from all the fabrics. If lamp is just deleted from one fabric, it can still be controlled on other connected fabrics. If you delete the lamp from the last fabric or delete the lamp from all fabrics, the lamp will be reset and will blink for six seconds.

It is also possible to manually reset a SMART+ Matter lighting device to factory settings. The lighting device needs to be turned ON and OFF five times in succession with three seconds time interval between the ON and OFF states. When switched on for the 6th time, the lighting device blinks for the first six seconds as confirmation and can now be added again to the LEDVANCE SMART+ app or any other Matter compatible system. Please note that the lamp will reconnect to the old configured system if remains ON for 15 seconds and then is turned off and on again or after the pairing mode of 15 minutes is turned off. 2.2.4.  CAN I USE MY SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES WITH REMOTE CONTROL?

No. Currently it is not possible to control the SMART+ Matter lighting devices with the existing SMART+ WiFi Remote Controls.
 
2.2.5.  CAN I OPERATE SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES USING A WALL SWITCH?

Yes. You can use your non smart wall switches to control your SMART+ MATTER Lighting devices. By turning off the lighting device with the switch, the lighting device will be powerless and will be shown as offline in the SMART+ App. In this case, if you have created automations, then they will not be executed, and you will not be able to turn the lighting device on with the connected MATTER app. To operate the lighting device again, you need to power the lamp again by turning on the wall switch. The behavior is similar if there is a power outage.
 
2.2.6.  CAN I DIM SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES WITH A CONVENTIONAL DIMMER?

No. It is not possible to dim our SMART+ MATTER Lighting devices with a conventional dimmer. It might even lead to flickering. Of course, you can dim SMART+ MATTER Lighting devices by using LEDVANCE SMART+ app or in any other Matter compatible system.

2.3.1.  WHAT CAN I DO IF A SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICE IS NOT WORKING OR SHOWS OFFLINE?

You can refer to the following mentioned points for troubleshooting. If the problem is still not resolved, then you can contact our support team directly using the following link.

a)  Check the power supply:

Please make sure that the SMART+ Matter lighting product in question has a working power supply and is switched on. The lamp can only receive commands when the electricity/light switch is turned on.

b)  Restart the lighting device:

Please switch off the power supply to the SMART+ Matter lamp in question when connecting it and then switch it on again. The connection may take up to one minute.
If the lamp is still not connected, please restart the LEDVANCE SMART+ app, or your used Matter system. Restarting your smart Speaker may also help.

c)  Check Internet and WiFi connections:
Please make sure that the smartphone or tablet which you are using are connected to the internet. If you are connecting to the internet via WiFi and your smartphone or tablet is not connecting to the internet, a restart of the router might help to fix the problem.

d)  Reduction of factors causing interference:

There are various external circumstances that could disrupt the functionality of the SMART+ Matter product. Please try to reduce them by employing the following steps:
-          Reduce the distance between the SMART+ Matter device and WiFi router or your Matter gateway like a Smart speaker.
-          Turn off devices that could produce additional WiFi signals near the SMART+ Matter products.
-          Surfaces that are made of electrically conductive materials might have a negative influence on the WiFi signal. Please try to remove them. Any obstacles may also impair the range.
 
e)  Re-addition to the system:

It may help to re-add the SMART+ Matter lighting device in question to your Matter system. How to manual reset your device check 2.2.3 HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES BE FACTORY RESET?

f)  E-mail support:

If your SMART+ Matter lighting device is still not working as expected, please contact our support team directly. Our support team will be pleased to provide further assistance.
 
2.3.2.     WHAT CAN I DO IF I ACCIDENTALLY MANUALLY RESET MY SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES?

In case you accidentally reset your LEDVANCE SMART+ MATTER Lighting devices by the wall switch, see also 2.2.3 HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER LIGHTING DEVICES BE FACTORY RESET?, keep them turned on for 15 seconds and then switch them off and on with the wall switch and the lighting device will automatically reconnect to the paired system and will be controllable by SMART+ App or Matter compatible App again.

 

3. SMART+ MATTER PLUGS

3.1.1.  WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED WITH SMART+ MATTER PLUGS?

Our LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products can be controlled with the compatible iOS or Android smartphones or tablets with the LEDVANCE SMART+ app or any other Matter compatible app like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple Home. The specific requirements may vary from system to system.

Please note that the SMART+ Matter products are not compatible with the old LEDVANCE SMART+ WiFi App.
 
3.1.2.     HOW CAN I ADD A SMART+ MATTER PLUG TO A MATTER COMPATIBLE SYSTEM?

The LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products need to be in pairing mode to add them to the MATTER system. The pairing mode is indicated by the blinking of power button. This is also the default state of our products. The plugs are then in pairing mode for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the pairing mode turns off and it is not possible to pair the Matter products into any system. To get the products back to the pairing mode, simply remove the plug from the power supply and insert it again. The plugs will then start blinking again and are in pairing mode for the next 15 minutes. In case the plugs don’t blink, then you need to factory reset the lamps. 3.1.3.  HOW CAN I UPDATE MY SMART+ MATTER PLUGS?

For safety reasons the SMART+ MATTER plugs remain off by default, when connected to the power grid. In case of power outage or if the plug is removed from socket and inserted again, then the plug will remain switched off, independently of the previous status of the plug. This default power on behavior can be changed at any time easily in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.

3.2.2.  WHAT IS THE WIRELESS RANGE OF SMART+ MATTER PLUGS?

The plug will then start blinking as a confirmation and can now be added again to the LEDVANCE SMART+ app or any other Matter compatible system. 3.2.4.  CAN I USE MY SMART+ MATTER PLUGS WITH REMOTE CONTROL?

No. Currently it is not possible to control the SMART+ Matter plugs with the existing SMART+ WiFi Remote Controls.
 
3.2.5.  CAN I SWITCH SMART+ MATTER PLUGS MANUALLY ON AND OFF?

Yes. The SMART+ MATTER plugs are equipped with a manual power button. The power button has a status LED which indicates the status of the plug. The LED status indication can be changed for the LEDVANCE SMART+ MATTER plugs in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.
 

3.3.1.  WHAT CAN I DO IF A SMART+ MATTER PLUG IS NOT WORKING OR SHOWS OFFLINE?

You can refer to the following mentioned points for troubleshooting. If the problem is still not resolved, then you can contact our support team directly using the following link.

a)  Check the power supply:

Please make sure that the SMART+ Matter plugs in question has a working power supply. The plug can only receive commands when the electricity is turned on.

Please remove the SMART+ Matter plug from the socket and insert it in again. The connection may take up to one minute.
If the plug is still not connected, please restart the LEDVANCE SMART+ app, or your used Matter system. Restarting your smart Speaker may also help.

3.3.2.     WHAT CAN I DO IF I ACCIDENTALLY MANUALLY RESET MY SMART+ MATTER PLUGS?

In case you accidentally reset your LEDVANCE SMART+ MATTER plugs by long pressing the power button, see also 3.2.3 HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER PLUGS BE FACTORY RESET?, keep them turned on for 15 seconds and then remove them from the socket and insert them again and then the plugs will automatically reconnect to the paired system and will be controllable by SMART+ App or Matter compatible App again. LEDVANCE SMART+ plugs will also automatically reconnect to the Matter system after 15 minutes, when the pairing mode is turned off.

 

OTHER MATTER ECOSYSTEMS

1.     GENERAL INFORMATION

The SMART+ Matter products are Matter certified and can be theoretically used in any Matter system. As Matter specification is quite new and developing fast, it might happen in some cases that there is no interoperability, and some products might have issues. In such a case please contact the system support team and additional our support team.

Please note that depending on the system there are different requirements given to use Matter products. Although Matter over WiFi devices can be paired directly to the WiFi router most of other Matter compatible apps require another device like smart speaker or TV as a hub.

Please find below the tested ecosystems with our products. The LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter devices can be controlled with these ecosystems.

2.    LEDVANCE SMART+ APP

2.1.1 WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET STARTED WITH THE LEDVANCE SMART+ APP?

We recommend to use our LEDVANCE SMART+ app for controlling our SMART+ Matter products. As a requirement for the LEDVANCE SMART+ app you need to have at least iOS 14 or Android 8.0 on your smartphone. No additional gateway or hub for Matter over WiFi devices is needed here. To set up a device you just need a WiFi router with 2.4 GHz. For more details, please check the FAQs of the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.
 
2.1.2 HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER PRODUCTS BE ADDED TO THE LEDVANCE SMART+ APP?

The adding process for Matter products is standardized. Since Matter products support the Multi Admin feature there are slight differences in the pairing process, if the Matter device is in pairing mode or already paired to different system. The Multi Admin feature allows the device to be added and controlled to several Matter systems, so called fabrics, at the same time. The maximum number of fabrics of the LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products is 5.
 
a) Product is not paired to any Matter fabric:
Make sure that the SMART+ Matter device is in pairing mode. When powering a SMART+ Matter lamp it will flash for 6 seconds and plugs will flash for 15 minutes. To add a SMART+ Matter product to the LEDVANCE SMART+ app you need to click on “Add device” and then click on “Matter” symbol. Then scan the QR-Code of the product with the camera or enter the 11 digits Matter code manually. More details can be found in the FAQs of the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.
 
b) Product is already paired to a Matter fabric:
If the product is already paired to a Matter fabric the QR-Code and 11 digits code on the product is not valid anymore and therefore new QR and manual code needs to be generated. This option can be found in the device settings of the connected Matter app. There you can generate a new QR-Code or 11 digits code, which can be entered in the adding process of Matter product. More information you can found in a) of this section.

After adding the SMART+ Matter products in the LEDVANCE SMART+ App, you can control them directly. It is important to note that there are additional features in the LEDVANCE SMART+ App as compared to other Matter compatible Apps. Please see below, which features can be used in LEDVANCE SMART+ app only and not in other Matter systems for certain product categories. Please note that this is just a general overview of the Matter systems, as some Matter systems could implement certain features in their own system.

All the Cloud-to-Cloud connections, which are used for SMART+ WiFi products don't work with SMART+ Matter products. For example, Matter products are not shared to Amazon Alexa or Google Home app with the LEDVANCE SMART+ Skill or Action. If you want to use our product also in these or other systems, you need to add the Matter product directly to this fabric. It is important that the desired system is Matter compatible. 3.     AMAZON ALEXA

3.1.1 WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET STARTED WITH THE AMAZON ALEXA APP?
The requirements to add LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter over WiFi devices in the Amazon Alexa app is to have an installed Amazon Echo, which supports Matter over WiFi, in your Alexa app account. Please check in detail if your Amazon Speaker supports Matter over WiFi.

3.1.2  HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER PRODUCTS BE ADDED TO THE AMAZON ALEXA APP?

The adding process for Matter products is standardized. Since Matter products support the Multi Admin feature there are slight differences in the pairing process, if the Matter device is in pairing mode or already paired to different system. The Multi Admin feature allows the device to be added and controlled to several Matter systems, so called fabrics, at the same time. The maximum number of fabrics of the LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products is 5.
 
a) Product is not paired to any Matter fabric:
Make sure that the device is in pairing mode. When powering a LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter lamp it will initially flash for 6 seconds and plugs will flash for 15 minutes. To start the pairing process for Matter devices, open the Amazon Alexa app and click on devices menu. Here click on add new devices and then scroll down and click on “Other”. In this menu you can click on Matter and scan the QR-Code of the product or enter the 11 digits code. Please check the help webpage of Amazon about pairing Matter devices to Amazon Alexa for more information.
 
b) Product is already paired to a Matter fabric:
If the product is already paired to a Matter fabric, the QR-Code and 11 digits code of the product is not valid anymore. To add the Matter device to a different fabric, you need to create a new pairing code in the app, to which the device is already connected. In general, the option to set the connected device in pairing mode is done in the device settings. A new QR-Code or 11 digits code can be generated there. How to generate a new Code in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app can be found in the FAQs of the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.  The new generated QR-Code or 11 digits code can now be entered in the Amazon Alexa app in the normal pairing process, which you can find in a).
In the Amazon Alexa environment, the SMART+ Matter products can be controlled by app, routines or voice commands. Compared to the LEDVANCE SMART+ app, Amazon Alexa supports just the features, which are covered by the Matter standard. For advanced features, you can use the Multi Admin feature and add the product to both fabrics in parallel. 4.     APPLE HOME


4.1.1  WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET STARTED WITH THE APPLE HOME APP?
The requirements to add LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter over WiFi devices in the Apple Home app is that your iphone or iPad needs to have at least iOS 16.1 version. Additional you need to have a suitable hub like the Apple HomePod Mini with the latest software version connected in the Apple Home app. More information about the requirements and the adding process can be found in the Apple support webpage.

4.1.2  HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER PRODUCTS BE ADDED TO THE APPLE HOME APP?

The adding process for Matter products is standardized. Since Matter products support the Multi Admin feature there are slight differences in the pairing process, if the Matter device is in pairing mode or already paired to different system. The Multi Admin feature allows the device to be added and controlled to several Matter systems, so called fabrics, at the same time. The maximum number of fabrics of the LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter products is 5.
 
a) Product is not paired to any Matter fabric:
Make sure that the device is in pairing mode. When powering a LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter lamp it will flash initially for 6 seconds and plugs will flash for 15 minutes. To start the pairing process for Matter devices, open the Apple Home app and click on “Add Accessory” in the “Home” overview page. Then you can scan the QR-Code of the product with camera or enter the 11 digits Matter code manually.
 
b) Product is already paired to a Matter fabric:
If the product is already paired to a Matter fabric, the QR-Code and 11 digits code of the product is not valid anymore. To add the Matter device to a different fabric, you need to create a new pairing code in the app, to which the device is already connected. In general, the option to set the connected device in pairing mode is done in the device settings.  A new QR-Code or 11 digits code can be generated there. To generate a new Code in the LEDVANCE SMART+ app, you can follow the steps in the FAQs of the LEDVANCE SMART+ app.  The new generated QR-Code or 11 digits code can now be entered in the Apple Home app in the normal pairing process, which you can find in a).

   

In the Apple Home environment, the SMART+ Matter products can be controlled by app, routines or voice commands. Compared to the LEDVANCE SMART+ app, Apple Home supports just the features, which are covered by the Matter standard. For advanced features you can use the Multi Admin feature and add the product to both fabrics in parallel. 5.     GOOGLE HOME

5.1.1 WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET STARTED WITH THE GOOGLE HOME APP?

The requirements to add LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter over WiFi devices in the Google Home app you require smart speaker, which is suitable for Matter over WiFi products. More details about requirements and about adding Matter devices to Google Home you can find at Google help webpage.

5.1.1  HOW CAN SMART+ MATTER PRODUCTS BE ADDED TO THE GOOGLE HOME APP?

The adding process for Matter products is standardized. Since Matter products support the Multi Admin feature there are slight differences in the pairing process, if the Matter device is in pairing mode or already paired to different system. Follow the steps and it is also possible that the LEDVANCE SMART+ Matter product might be discovered directly during scanning if its nearby. If device was not yet discovered, you can select the “Matter-enabled device” option. For both options on the next screen, you can scan the QR-Code of the product or enter the 11 digits Matter code manually.
 
b) Product is already paired to a Matter fabric:
If the product is already paired to a Matter fabric the QR-Code and 11 digits code of the product is not valid anymore. To add the Matter device to a different fabric you need to create a new pairing code in the app, to which the device is already connected.
