Bellingham International Airport faced growingconcerns over outdated metal halide lightingin its outdoor parking areas. The fixturesdelivered poor illumination, required frequentmaintenance, and contributed to high energycosts. These issues impacted safety, visibility, and operational efficiency for both travelersand airport staff.
To address these challenges, LEDVANCEpartnered with North Coast Electric to install100 SYLVANIA LED Area Lights across theairport’s main and economy parking lots. Thenew fixtures, featuring a 4000K colortemperature and IP65 rating, were mountedon existing poles in a phased rollout by in-house electricians. This approach ensuredminimal disruption to airport operations whiledelivering a modern, energy-efficient lightingsolution.
The lighting upgrade resulted in a 56%reduction in energy consumption, saving theairport over $10,000 annually andapproximately 100,000 kWh. Maintenancecosts were also significantly reduced—by anestimated $6,000 to $8,000 per year—thanksto the fixtures’ 150,000-hour lifespan.Additionally, the project qualified for nearly$27,000 in utility rebates and achieved apayback period of just 1.1 years, making it afinancially and operationally soundinvestment.
The upgrade improved overall lighting for customers departing or arriving during low-light hours, and the Port has also observed a benefit for operations, security, and tenants performing their nightly tasks in the parking lots.
