LEDVANCE modernizes sports lighting for broadcasts at the Madrid WiZink Center

Custom lighting system enhances the overall experience, meets requirements for broadcasts, and reduces maintenance efforts

With a capacity of up to 18,000 spectators, the WiZink Center is one of the most important venues for cultural and sporting events in Madrid. It is also home to the basketball teams CB Estudiantes and Real Madrid Baloncesto. In order to continue meeting the requirements of the Basketball World Federation (FIBA) for hosting international competitions, the arena's lighting needed modernization to provide a court focused, NBA-style lighting solution that would enhance the experience of the players and the audience. Garching-based lighting expert LEDVANCE has developed a new lighting system with custom LED projectors that not only comply with all FIBA and EUROLEAGUE regulations but also significantly improve the lighting experience at sporting events while considerably reducing maintenance efforts.

With the newly implemented system, the WiZink Center meets all the requirements for basketball games and television broadcasts at both national and international levels. The new lighting offers a significant improvement in color reproduction on television, higher brightness levels, and uniformity on the court. In addition, the integrated DMX system enables spectacular lighting effects with scene control.

According to the client's needs and the venue's capabilities, LEDVANCE has developed a lighting system entirely designed and manufactured in Europe. Custom LED projectors provide flexible and adaptable lighting according to the moment's needs. A total of 224 LED modules with 320 W and a very high color rendering index (CRI) are used in groups of 4 LED modules with external and independent power supply and DMX control. This arrangement allows individual control of each lighting module.

The new lighting system features supplies and controllers that are located externally and independently of the LED modules. As a result, maintenance work is greatly reduced and can be performed without auxiliary lifting systems.

“The agreement with LEDVANCE to transform the venue into a world reference in sports lighting represents another step forward in the technological renovation of the WiZink Center,” said Manolo Saucedo, Managing Director at WiZink Center. “I would also like to thank LEDVANCE for having chosen our venue to continue developing its innovative lighting technologies project.“
