CONTEMPORARY HISTORY SHED NEW LIGHT

LEDVANCE modernizes the wall, corridor and office lighting of the former parliamentary  high-rise building in Bonn with innovative LED technology, enabling significant reductions in CO2 emissions and electricity consumption.

The high-rise building known as the "Langer Eugen" on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn is a monument to German parliamentary history as a former parliamentary high-rise. Today, it still shapes the cityscape of Bonn as the seat of international organizations and is owned by the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA). On behalf of the Gegenbauer Group, which provides facility management services for the BImA, LEDVANCE has comprehensively modernized the wall, corridor, and office lighting in the "Langer Eugen." The existing wall lighting was retrofitted by LEDVANCE with SubstiTube T8 LED tubes in combination with pre-assembled plug-and-play cable harnesses using LED technology. Low-glare (UGR<19) and specially customized LED downlights are now installed in the corridor areas to meet customer requirements. In the office spaces, the luminaires were equipped with SubstiTube T5 LED tubes and subsequently re-certified by TÜV.

New technology in a familiar context

With the modernization of the lighting, the goal was to visually harmonize the past and the future. Therefore, the LED lamps were integrated into the existing luminaires as much as possible while respecting the previous aesthetics. The results are impressive from an ecological perspective as well: the modern LED tubes and downlights in the wall, corridor, and office lighting enable savings in electricity consumption of more than 352,000 kWh per year. This corresponds to a CO2 reduction of approximately 167,000 kg. Another advantage is that by replacing, for example, T5 fluorescent lamps with modern LED tubes, the lighting in the "Langer Eugen" is now permanently compliant with the EU-wide fluorescent lamp ban.

Profitable investment with perspective

The modernized luminaires also impress with improved light quality and can be used with different luminous intensities and colors (3,000 to 6,500 K) as required. Due to the significantly longer rated service life of the LED tubes and LED downlights, as well as the elimination of an electronic ballast, maintenance costs are also reduced. The return on investment (ROI), including installation costs, is only 1.3 years. The safety of the lighting during the renovation and operation was also confirmed by TÜV.
