AMENDMENTS TO EU ROHS DIRECTIVE 2011/65/EU ROHS AT A GLANCE: ALL THE CHANGES, ALL THE ALTERNATIVES

The RoHS directive of the European Union regulates, among other things, the use of mercury in lighting products. In the spring of 2022, the EU Commission revised the exemptions defined in Annex III of the directive. LEDVANCE will tell you what you need to know for your lighting business and can offer you a wide-ranging portfolio of future-proof lamps and luminaires.

ROHS – AN OVERVIEW OF THE CHANGES

The use of mercury in lighting products is prohibited by the RoHS directive. However, the directive includes exemptions for T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases (CFLni), HPD lamps and special-purpose lamps (e.g. UV-C lamps). These exemptions defined in Annex III of the EU Regulation have been amended. The consequences are as follows:

  • A ban on all T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps from August 25, 2023
  • A ban on all CFLni lamps from February 25, 2023
  • An extension to the exemption for HPD lamps of 3 to 5 years
  • An extension to the exemption for special-purpose lamps of 3 to 5 years

TIP: THINK ABOUT DEMAND PLANNING AND STOCKPILING

In accordance with the amended RoHS directive, compact fluorescent lamps and fluorescent lamps may no longer be placed on the market in the European Union from February 25, 2023 and August 25, 2023 respectively. However, it will still be possible to sell and use stored existing stock. Take this into account in your planning and order extra quantities in good time.
