LEDVANCE has worked with SV Werder Bremen to modernise the lighting at the Weser Stadium with an LED floodlight system. It ensures optimum visibility and an impressive atmosphere, making the stadium fit for the future and setting new standards in light quality and energy efficiency.
Project benefits:

  • CLIMATE PROTECTION & EFFICIENCY: The new LED lighting reduces connected load by 26%, lowers energy consumption and saves approx. 57 kilograms of CO₂per operating hour compared to the previous lighting system.
  • PERFECT STADIUM EXPERIENCE: Uniform illumination, brilliant colour rendering and flicker-free operation ensure optimal conditions for fans and TV broadcasts.
  • MINIMAL MAINTENANCE: LED lights are maintenance-free and only need to becleaned every two years.
  • COMFORT FOR RESIDENTS AND THE SURROUNDING AREA: thanks to precise light control, disruptive light emissions are a thing of the past, which benefits both residents and the environment.

Together with SV Werder Bremen and Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH (BWS), LEDVANCE has modernised the lighting at the historic Weser Stadium. At the heart of the project is a state-of-the-art LED floodlight system that will meet the demanding requirements of the UEFA Elite Class A standard in future. The iconic floodlight masts remain as landmarks and have been cleverly integrated into the new lighting concept. This new lighting not only ensures optimal visibility on the pitch, but also creates an impressive atmosphere for players and fans alike. With this investment, the stadium is fit for the future and sets new standards in terms of light quality and energy efficiency.

THE CHALLENGE

The modernisation was not only a question of technology, but also a race against time, as the previous lighting did not meet the requirements of either UEFA or the DFL. A quick solution was crucial to secure the licence for TV broadcasts.

Due to the summer break, there were just six weeks available to install 264 powerful FL Arena Quattro luminaires. The sensitive hybrid turf made it impossible to use heavy vehicles, so heavy-duty cranes and industrial climbers were used.

The result is a precisely coordinated lighting concept with flexible luminaires that meets the highest quality standards and creates ideal conditions even for international competitions. Despite a tight schedule and complex logistical challenges, the modernisation of the stadium lighting was completed on time, so that the stadium is now perfectly lit in every respect.

THE SOLUTION

LEDVANCE took on the entire planning and implementation of the conversion and developed a tailor-made LED lighting concept that meets even the highest technical requirements. PREWORKS is the innovative manufacturer behind the Smart Arena products and guarantees the highest quality and forward-looking solutions.

The entire lighting system was thus converted to state-of-the-art LED technology: 264 FL Arena Quattro luminaires now provide perfect illumination, 140 on the floodlight masts and 124 under the stadium roof. Only the sum of the luminaires guarantees uniform light distribution for brilliant TV images. In addition, the green LED individual luminaires on the masts and in the surrounding lighting create emotional highlights and underline the club identity of SV Werder Bremen.

THE BENEFITS

With the new LED lighting in the Weser Stadium, LEDVANCE is focusing not only on emotion, but also on efficiency and environmental awareness. The connected load of the entire system has been reduced from the original 506 kilowatts to 374 kilowatts – around 26 per cent less energy consumption and a saving of around 57 kilograms of CO₂ per operating hour. For Werder Bremen, this means significantly lower operating costs and an active contribution to climate protection.

The system is also impressive in terms of maintenance, as the LED lights are maintenance-free and only need to be cleaned every two years. In addition, all the electronics, including the power supply units, have been relocated to the lower areas of the stadium, which makes accessibility and maintenance much easier.

The new system offers a completely new experience for fans and TV broadcasts. The pitch is now evenly lit, annoying shadows are a thing of the past and colour rendering is of the highest quality. All this is achieved with flicker-free operation that meets even the requirements of the latest camera technology.

Local residents also benefit: thanks to precise light control, disruptive light emissions are a thing of the past. LEDVANCE combines state-of-the-art technology with sustainability and comfort for a stadium that sets new standards in every respect.

SUMMARY

With the new LED lighting system, LEDVANCE has not only modernised the Weser Stadium technically, but also enhanced its atmosphere. The result: a sustainable, future-proof lighting system that perfectly combines sport, emotion and the environment.

With the new floodlight system, we have made the Weser Stadium fit for the future. We will now be able to offer our fans a modern stadium experience and, as a club, we are ideally positioned to meet all the requirements of Bundesliga broadcasts and beyond. At the same time, the system is an important component of our decarbonisation strategy.
