Replacing old lamps with energy-efficient lighting, while matching the traditional look of the building

Kings Cross Station wanted to replace its old lamps with a solution that significantly reduces maintenance costs and energy consumption while future-proofing the building’s illumination systems. However, the Victorian building is a site of national significance and even small changes to its structure require planning authority approval. While looking the same as the old lights, the new LEDVANCE solution provides significant energy savings whilst lasting longer.

Making life easier for lighting installers

The old lamps originally installed at the iconic train station were failing frequently and changing them required specialist lift equipment which, for health and safety reasons, could only be used at certain times of the night when the concourse was empty. The station needed new luminaires that were not only more energy efficient, but also far more reliable. The new High Bay units now last far longer, providing a constant luminous flux across their five-year guaranteed lifespan, and thus not only cut maintenance costs, but also make life easier for installers.

Energy savings of up to 60% with the new LEDVANCE lighting solution

LEDVANCE LED HIGH BAY solutions, which significantly reduced maintenance costs and energy consumption while future-proofing the building's lighting systems, have been installed on platforms 1-8 at London's historic King’s Cross station. More than 160 High Bay DALI 155W, 4000K LEDs and reflectors have been installed. These provide energy savings of up to 60% compared to traditional High Bay luminaires. LEDVANCE High Bay solutions also offer the flexibility to be dimmable and instantly on/off, allowing daylight and occupancy-based savings to be realised. The LEDVANCE High Bay luminaire provided the ideal solution to increase energy efficiency, while at the same time maintaining the original appearance of the building.

Energy-efficient lighting with LEDVANCE HIGH BAY DALI GEN 3

The efficacy of a light source is calculated in lumens per watt (lm/W). High efficacy (over 100 lm/W) means producing light with as little energy as possible, and thus reducing the CO2 emitted through the production of electricity. Above that, a high efficacy helps the customer save on energy bills. With a luminous efficacy up to 140 lm/W, LEDVANCE HIGH BAY DALI GEN 3 allows energy savings of up to 90% compared to conventional High Bay luminaires. The product can be used as replacement for High Bay luminaires with mercury vapour or metal halide lamps. Main areas of application are warehouses, logistics halls or industry buildings/buildings with high ceilings (e.g. in shopping malls, airports, commercial buildings, lobbies).
